CHAPEL STREET -Lyrics Wayne Gillespie (Music: W.Gillespie/R.Grosser) 1.This geography is unfamiliar, I'm lost I'm incomplete As the cars wait for the trams, to rattle down Chapel Street I recognised you in an instant, from behind your shades You smiled and you said politely –“you know you haven't changed". Thought you and I would never lie...again. 2. We find a coffee table and order chocolate And though I don't say the words I'm thinking ,that you still look great You keep your sunglasses on, you say the light it hurts your head You say you drank too much wine last night, that's why your eyes are red Thought you and I would never lie.....again. 3. And so in 15 minutes we try to summarize The last 15 years of our separate lives Are you married? Do you have kids? We both answered “No” “Never was the plan, still things could change – I guess you never know”. You and I could never lie..again No you and I could never lie...again. 4. You said you moved to Melbourne, about 8 years ago Me I said "I went to Sydney I'm just down here.. to play the Bert Newton show" I said "I heard about book, I read a great review” And you said "I heard your song on the radio - you know something? You still sing out of tune" No you and I could never lie...again No you and I could never lie ...again. 5. And so we talked a little ‘bout our past regrets About the mistakes we made ..and about the rest We tried to apologize for all those things we did and did not do You said your new boyfriend plays guitar in a band, “you know something? He’s a bit like you” No you and I will never lie....again No you and I will never lie .....again Yes you and I we used to share the same breath But you and I ....will never lie again. 6. You got up to go and said "I guess I should be on my way" and A tiny part of me was hoping , was hoping that you'd stay And so I walked with you up towards the Yarra And it felt strange and yet so familiar for us to be together No you and I will never lie..... again.... No you and I will never lie .....again Yes you and I we used to share the same bed But you and I will never lie …again (…could we try again? ) 7. This geography is so familiar ...mmm This geography is so familiar ..mmm As the cars wait for the trams... mmm As cars wait for the trams …on Chapel Street.

about

Chapel Street - a Sydney songwriter travels to Melbourne for the first time to appear on Channel 10’s Bert Newton show. Realising he has forgotten his capo he wanders down Chapel Street looking for a music store when he experiences an unexpected close encounter (of the first kind)!

“The hubris of calling themselves Famous Blue Raincoat is definitely justified ..I don’t know about Cohen for me there is an essence of Lou Reed in that track Chapel Street..” John Lampe Tempo The Pulse (94.7FM The Pulse)
