1) He wrote greeting card inscriptions, yes that was his job
And he would stare into space until he found a line that he could be proud of
"It's good to find a hard man", that was one of his - and then there was that

2) Yes he had aspirations, yes he had much bigger plans - he dreamed that

4) And his best man was ambitious, so he got into advertising –and one day
He asked his friend for a bit of help, and his friend said “What about “Coke is the real thing?”
And his best man got rich, using his friends throwaway pearls
And he drove a red Porsche convertible and he was always surrounded by girls.

But he never was a jealous - no he never was a jealous man
He just minded his business -he was just doing the best that he can (the best that he can)

5) And his wife became discontented, she says “why can't you be more like him?”
He says "I like what I do, I make people laugh, think of all the pleasure I bring!”

He’s just doing the best that he can, the best that he can

6) And one day his wife she left him, for a man who won the Pulitzer prize She said "the trouble with you dear, is that you could never tell big enough lies"

And then he went to the garage and he started the car

8) Yes he'd taped up the windows ‘cos he didn't want to waste anything
And then he pulled out a blank get well card and wrote "I’m into recycling"
