Jealous Man - Greeting Card writers the unsung heroes of the creative world -They have plenty to be Jealous about!

lyrics

JEALOUS MAN
(W.Gillespie/R.Grosser)

No he never was a jealous, no he never was a jealous man
He just minded his business, he was just doing the best that he can

1) He wrote greeting card inscriptions, yes that was his job
And he would stare into space until he found a line that he could be proud of
"It's good to find a hard man", that was one of his - and then there was that
Picture of two trapeze artists, flying through the air saying "We can't go on meeting like this!"

But he never was a jealous - No he never was a jealous man

2) Yes he had aspirations, yes he had much bigger plans - he dreamed that
One day he might own his own business, he might work for himself, selling singing telegrams
And he married his sweetheart , when he was in his prime - and the
Best man's speech brought the house down, but it was the groom who’d written all his best lines.

But he never was a jealous -no he never was a jealous man

4) And his best man was ambitious, so he got into advertising –and one day
He asked his friend for a bit of help, and his friend said “What about “Coke is the real thing?”
And his best man got rich, using his friends throwaway pearls
And he drove a red Porsche convertible and he was always surrounded by girls.

But he never was a jealous - no he never was a jealous man
He just minded his business -he was just doing the best that he can (the best that he can)

5) And his wife became discontented, she says “why can't you be more like him?”
He says "I like what I do, I make people laugh, think of all the pleasure I bring!”

But he never was a jealous - No he never was a jealous man
He’s just doing the best that he can, the best that he can

6) And one day his wife she left him, for a man who won the Pulitzer prize She said "the trouble with you dear, is that you could never tell big enough lies"

No he never was a jealous – No he never was a jealous man

7) So he went to the backyard, and cut a length off the garden hose
And then he went to the clothesline and took down a pair of his wife’s pantyhose
And then he went to the garage and he started the car
And he put on his seat belt, took a slug of Smirnoff and lit up a Cuban cigar.

But he never was a jealous – No he never was a jealous man

8) Yes he'd taped up the windows ‘cos he didn't want to waste anything
And then he pulled out a blank get well card and wrote "I’m into recycling"

But he never was a jealous – no he never was a jealous man
No he never was a jealous - no he never was a jealous man, jealous man
....Jealous man
....Jealous man
....Jealous man
....Jealous man
Prologue
9)So on your next birthday, spare a thought for the greeting card king
And take some time to read his lines, and smile, before you throw it into the bin.
No he never was a jealous - he never was a jealous man
He just minded his business - he was just doing the best that he can
